What is Signum Vitae ?

Signum Vitae is a Latin word  which means “sign of life” Signum Vitae is a cooperative of physically disabled persons in Addis Abeba, Ethiopia.

Signum Vitae was established 20 yeas ago by an NGO from Switzerland. The overall project was changed from NGO into a cooperative in 2004, where the members are the previous beneficiaries of the project. The project is fully in the hands of the cooperative since May 2008.

The cooperative has 38 members.All members were trained in the project for two years in different profession by foreign experts and have permant working places. Once in a year the net profit is be distributed to the members of the cooperative.

All together, Signum Vitae cooprative is hiring 60 people for the different workshops, the shops and the administration from which one is German.

The members of  Signum Vitae have different physically disablilties, congenital or acquired after diseases like polio, burning, deafness and blindness. Some are sitting in wheelchairs, others are moving with crutches. Everybody has a working place according to his/her disability/ability.

Signum Vitae has an eye-clinic which is leased to an Ethiopian ophtalmologist who studied in German. Her name is Dr. Alem Michael.

The cooperative has the following workshops and shops.
